Prosecutors say a Chicago Public Schools teacher was stabbed on a CTA #77 Belmont bus on September 10 while riding home from work, in an attack captured on transit video. The alleged assailant, 32-year-old Jeromeyo Gibson, boarded the bus and — prosecutors allege — pulled a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times at the Belmont and Milwaukee intersection before fleeing south on Milwaukee Avenue.
According to prosecutors, Gibson then allegedly took a running vehicle whose owner had briefly gone into a store, pulled the owner to the ground and drove off. About 15 minutes later police were alerted to a crash involving that vehicle on Wrightwood Avenue; prosecutors say Gibson fled the wreck and was found nearby still carrying a duffle bag that contained a six-inch kitchen knife.
A detention filing and court records show Gibson is charged with attempted murder, possessing a stolen motor vehicle, attempting to disarm a peace officer and other felonies in connection with the September 10 incidents. A judge granted the state’s request to keep him detained pending trial; court records also list prior felony convictions from 2019 and 2022, prosecutors say.
All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
