Cook County prosecutors charged Christian McBounds, 18, in September in the Labor Day shoving that led to a man being pushed from a northbound CTA Red Line train and struck by another train near the 69th Street station along the Dan Ryan Expressway, authorities said. McBounds faces counts including first-degree murder, felony murder, aggravated battery to a transit passenger and mob action; a judge ordered him detained at a Cook County Criminal Court hearing on September 23, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said three other people were involved: a 19-year-old woman and a teenage girl have also been charged, and police continue to seek a fourth man identified in surveillance video. Officials allege the four boarded at the 95th Street terminal, sat in the same car, engaged the victim and then forced him out of the moving train.
Investigators reported surveillance footage and Ventra card records helped identify McBounds and the 19-year-old. Prosecutors said McBounds was arrested at his Chicago home in the Morgan Park neighborhood and does not have a prior criminal record; an arrest warrant had been issued earlier, prosecutors said.
All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
