Hours-long South Jackson standoff ends with man in custody, four children safe

A prolonged hostage standoff in South Jackson concluded early Tuesday morning with one man taken into custody and four children unharmed. Jackson Police Department (JPD) officials say the incident began when a man entered a residence on Dianne Drive with three children and barricaded himself; a fourth chld was reportedly outside and was not taken inside. All children were later returned to their mother.
According to JPD timelines, the confrontation began at about 6:45 p.m. Monday and continued into the following morning, ending around 7 a.m. when SWAT operators breached the home. Officers say the suspect attempted to flee through a window during the breach; officers used a Taser and placed him in handcuffs. Crisis negotiators and investigators were deployed during the response.
Police identified the man as 44-year-old Christopher Walker and recovered a firearm from the residence. JPD stated detectives had been in the neighborhood investigating shootings and homicides from the weekend and that an officer’s interaction with Walker precipitated his entry into the home. The department is examining whether Walker has any connection to the recent weekend incidents.
As of the latest update, Walker is in custody and has been brought in for questioning. JPD has not filed charges at this time as the investigation continues.
