Geneva house fire kills 15 dogs; suspect held without bond in Seminole County

Seminole County authorities say a man was arrested after investigators concluded he deliberately set his Geneva house on fire while more than a dozen dogs were inside. Firefighters, Animal Services and Sheriff’s Office personnel searched the burned residence and recovered the remains of multiple animals; Seminole County later confirmed the total death toll of dogs in the blaze was 15.
The suspect, identified in court records as Terrance Banks, made an initial court appearance the day after the fire. Crews combed debris at the scene as investigators processed evidence. Seminole County personnel and responding fire crews removed what appeared to be bodies of dogs from the home during the scene investigation.
Banks is charged with arson and animal cruelty, and prosecutors told the court they considered him a danger to himself and the community. At the initial appearance, defense counsel said Banks had been experiencing mental-health issues on the day of the fire and requested an evaluation; the judge ordered the defendant held without bond pending a mental-health evaluation at the jail.
Court records reviewed by reporters include an earlier 2021 arrest for alleged assault and battery involving the defendant’s parents, with allegations that he once threatened to burn their house. The case remains in the early stages: the defendant is in custody, charged with arson and animal cruelty, and a mental-health evaluation has been ordered by the court.
