A Gainesville police detective was arrested by the FBI on allegations that he provided sensitive law-enforcement information to individuals involved in drug trafficking in the Gainesville area. The arrest was announced by federal and local officials and followed a multi-agency investigation led by the FBI’s Jacksonville field office.

According to court filings and statements from prosecutors, the detective faces eight felony counts: four counts of divulging law-enforcement sensitive information to the target of an investigation, three counts of unauthorized use of a law-enforcement restricted database, and one count of unauthorized interception of oral communication. State court records indicate he was initially charged with obstruction of justice, illegal interception of communications and fraud before the current eight-count warrant was filed.

Federal and local agencies say investigators allege the officer used his position to tip off drug dealers and compromise other investigations, and that those actions risked officer safety. The investigation was led by the FBI’s Jacksonville office, with the State Attorney for the 8th Judicial Circuit involved in the charging decisions. Gainesville Police leadership has confirmed the arrest and described the matter as the result of a longstanding investigation.

Documented facts: the officer joined the Gainesville Police Department in 2018, had served eight years with the department and was a member of its SWAT team; he made an initial court appearance where bond was set at $600,000 and his passport was ordered surrendered. The investigation is ongoing and prosecutors have not released details about specific drugs or alleged co-conspirators.

All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
