A woman was critically injured after being pulled from a mangled car following a rear-end crash on northbound I-69 in Fort Wayne, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department. The collision occurred near the 311.8 mile marker between the Coldwater Avenue and Lima Road exits late Wednesday night; emergency crews reported the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu was trapped inside and required extrication.

Police say the sequence began when a dark-colored Chevrolet Malibu was stopped in the northbound lanes with no lights activated and a gray Chrysler Pacifica struck it from behind. Fort Wayne Fire Department crews extricated the Malibu driver, who was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital in life-threatening condition. Multiple other injuries were reported; the department has not released conditions for those individuals.

Because of the severity of the injuries, the Fort Wayne Police Department’s Fatal Accident Crash Team assumed the investigation and the department’s Air Support Unit provided aerial documentation of the scene. Northbound I-69 was rerouted at the Lima Road exit for several hours; lanes were reported to have reopened by about 1:30 a.m.

Investigators believe alcohol was a contributing factor, according to police. Those allegations are attributed to the Fort Wayne Police Department; the report does not include arrests, charges, confirmed toxicology results, or statements about motive. The investigation remains with the Fatal Accident Crash Team.
