Driver arrested after vehicle strikes pedestrians, car and building entrance in Grand Forks

Grand Forks police say a local man was arrested after his car struck multiple pedestrians, another vehicle and the entrance to an apartment building in the city on the evening of Sept. 23, 2026. Officers responded to reports of a reckless driver and a vehicle disabled after striking a tree in the South 16th Street area.
According to the investigating agency, officers were called around 5:40 p.m. to the South 16th Street after a report that a vehicle had hit a pedestrian and then a tree, disabling the vehicle. Investigators say the vehicle then struck two pedestrians and another motor vehicle before crashing into the apartment building entrance; a third pedestrian was involved but not injured after taking cover behind the struck tree.
Police allege the driver, identified by investigators as Ian Matthew Schneeweis, fled the scene on foot but was located and arrested a few blocks away. The two injured pedestrians were taken to Altru Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was also taken to Altru for medical assessment and, after being cleared, was booked into the Grand Forks Correctional Center.
Grand Forks Police Department reports the suspect was booked on three counts of attempted murder along with additional criminal charges; authorities have not released further details about what led to the crash. The case remains under investigation by Grand Forks law enforcement.
