Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools launches superintendent search after board fires leader

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is conducting a search for a new superintendent after the school board voted to fire Dr. Crystal Hill, district officials say. The board is preparing the structure and guidelines for that search, with a primary early decision to determine whether to hire an outside search firm — an option favored by CMS board Chair Dee Rankin.
The board’s move follows prior coverage noting involvement from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education in an investigation into CMS finances. School board members are scheduled to set the search process; former board member Summer Nunn, who chaired the previous superintendent search committee, warned that public board tension could reduce the candidate pool and described recruiting as “challenging.” Chair Rankin offered a contrasting view, saying he does not believe recent controversies will deter qualified applicants.
This will be the district’s eighth permanent superintendent in a decade, according to the district. The distinction between allegations and proven facts is reflected in reporting: the board’s firing of Dr. Crystal Hill and the formal mechanics of the new search are documented actions by the district, while concerns about candidate interest and the effect of public board dynamics are commentary and assessment from former board members.
Current case status: the board is preparing to establish the search’s structure and guidelines and has identified the choice of engaging an external search firm as a key initial decision. No appointment has been announced.
