A Brockton woman was sentenced on Oct. 5, 2026, in federal court in Boston after pleading guilty to stealing a United States Treasury tax refund check, the Department of Justice said. U.S. District Court Judge Allison D. Burroughs imposed a two-month prison term followed by two months of supervised release; the DOJ said restitution may be ordered later.

According to the DOJ, the defendant was arrested in December 2025 and pleaded guilty in June 2026 to one count of theft of government funds. The department said she attempted to deposit a Treasury tax refund check issued to a healthcare company in Brooklyn, New York, after incorporating a Massachusetts company using the payee’s name and opening bank accounts in that name.

The DOJ report states the woman created four additional Massachusetts companies over roughly two years that lacked legitimate business purposes, opened accounts at multiple banks for one shell entity, received wire transfers into some accounts, and then moved funds by wire or cash withdrawal. The banks later closed the accounts, the department said.

The Department of Justice announced the sentence and described the prosecution handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Securities, Financial & Cyber Fraud Unit. The DOJ also identified investigators from IRS Criminal Investigation and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service as having participated in the case.

All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
