Bay County law enforcement say a mother and her partner were arrested after investigators allege the man threatened two children with a sledgehammer, smashed their belongings and burned the debris in the backyard. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office led a month-long probe that began after a school resource deputy received an anonymous tip involving students at Merritt Brown Middle School.

According to deputies, the investigation began Sept. 2 after the anonymous tip. Forensic interviews with the children identified an August confrontation over a broken camera tripod; when the children would not admit to breaking it, deputies say the man brought a large sledgehammer into their bedrooms, swung it into furniture and personal items, and ordered one chld to place a hand on a table while he raised the tool overhead. Investigators report the siblings were then forced to move the smashed items to a backyard burn pile, where those items were torched. Forensic interviewers noted indicators of psychological trauma and mental injury in the children.

The Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the residence on Sept. 30. Deputies allege both adults later told the children to keep quiet; authorities say both suspects confessed during post-arrest interviews to their roles in the incident and an ensuing cover-up. The charged individuals were booked into the county jail following the investigation.

Criminal charges filed by prosecutors, as reported by deputies, include multiple counts against the man for aggravated assault, chld abuse and tampering with a victim, and counts against the woman for failure to protect and tampering with a victim. The report documents the arrests and charges and lists the Bay County Sheriff’s Office as the investigating agency; both suspects remain in custody pending prosecution.

All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
